Spending on Data Infrastructure Continues to Grow, But Data Quality is Key

Across the globe, spending on data infrastructure climbs higher every year. In fact, Gigaom noted that Google alone spent nearly US$11 billion throughout 2014 on real estate, equipment and data centre construction. The fourth quarter alone saw the company’s spending hit $3.5 billion.

This isn’t exclusive to the search giant, as other organisations around the world are starting to see the value in access to massive quantities of data, and are taking action to gather it effectively. However, businesses can’t simply lock information in a data centre and expect to derive value from it; these organisations need to ensure that it’s quality data.

The solution is, of course, a capable data management method – but first it’s a good idea to better understand the need for such a solution.

It’s not just Google that continues to see the value in data.

Spending ticks upwards

As noted above, it’s not just Google that continues to see the value in data. Microsoft spent around $1.5 billion on infrastructure in the second fiscal quarter of last year, and Facebook spent more than $1.8 billion in 2014. Down Under, Gartner expects Australian organisations to spend AU$2.5 billion on data centre systems this year alone.

These data centres play a critical role in information management, as they allow businesses to start gathering customer data, along with other information relevant to their specific sectors. Data centres are fast becoming the backbone of the the digital age.

Gartner Managing Vice President Michele Caminos explained that factors like cloud, social and mobile are creating a new digital business world – one that needs a new approach to data centre demand as well as management.

“The future data centre is moving toward a more fluid architecture, focusing on workflow relative to how it interoperates and collaborates with other systems and cloud components to support digital business, rather than workload,” she said.

“It is also focused on what the work is doing and supporting, rather than where it is located. Organisations have to look at their data centre environment at a much higher level today.”

So, data centres continue to both proliferate and evolve in line with the requirements of businesses, but it’s not enough to simply store data, no matter how capable the storage methods are. Businesses need to ensure that the information being used is up to the right quality standards. With the data quantities at play, a new approach is neccessary.

Ensuring data quality

Master Data Management (MDM) is an approach to information management that can prove useful, no matter the size of the organisation of the quantity of data. Primarily, it’s designed to eliminate redundant customer data, which in turn means staff will run into fewer problems when they need to access the right information.

It’s easy to see why such a system is necessary, as accessing the wrong information can often lead to numerous business issues. Customers will have the wrong data logged in the system, and staff will have to spend time searching for the correct of information.

In most cases, MDM doesn’t change the actual data, but simply propagates changes across the various systems in use by the business. Data mastering, however, involves managing the accuracy of the master data itself. Usually, once the data has parsed through data mastering it’s then delivered to an MDM system for distribution. Then, the information can be synchronised across all required systems.
